Andrew was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and raised in Matlock, where he attended local primary and secondary schools.

He undertook undergraduate studies at the University of Aberdeen (MA, Political Studies) following which he returned to Derbyshire to pursue a career as a Solicitor.

He joined a Derbyshire firm of Solicitors, Flint Bishop, as an Articled Clerk in 1990, going on to be appointed Senior Partner in 2015, having developed a national practise specialising in the licensed trade and hospitality sector. He continues to serve as his firm’s Non- Executive Chairman.

He joined the Board of Derby College in 2019 and now serves as Chair of the Board.

He is a Trustee of the Derbyshire Community Foundation and has recently joined the Board of the Arkwright Society (an organisation promoting education and conservation focusing on Sir Richard Arkwright’s historic mills in Cromford, Derbyshire).

Andrew was appointed Under Sheriff of Derbyshire in 2011 (a post from which he retired in 2024) and a Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire in 2015.  He became Vice Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire in May 2025 .

He lives in Brassington, Derbyshire with his wife Karen.
